EDWARD ATTARD SELVAGI
BSc. Biology
1st year

Ever since choosing my subjects in secondary school, I knew that a career in science was where I wanted to be, particularly a career in biology. Luckily I have found myself enrolled in the biology single honours course and have had the privilege of studying beneath well established professionals in the field. The first semester has proven to be an enjoyable experience, but I am looking forward to learning so much more, not only about the field of biology but about the scientific community itself.

Throughout the first semester I have seen S-Cubed at work, through their efforts I have felt welcome in the Faculty of Science, something most first year students want more than anything else. Thanks to the activities they organised, such as the conferences and gatherings, I have had the opportunity to meet with professors and graduating students who have given me invaluable advice for the coming years. As luck would have it, I have been given a chance to get involved with S-Cubed and help their cause in any way I can.

If given this opportunity, I will strive to improve the experience of being a science student by hopefully understanding and solving any problems we, as a team, may be presented with.

yACOPO BALDACCHINO
BSC. BIOLOGY
2nd year

Throughout my three years at the UoM, S-Cubed has always been there to help shape me into the person I am standing before you today. This year S-Cubed is celebrating its 15th Anniversary so in my term hope to commemorate the work built by all the previous executive members and continue building on it. I wish to continue improving on our trademark events such as the Annual Science Conference, On the Trail, The Lab and the Annual Science Gathering, whilst also coming up with brand new events and opportunities. I wish to continue working on R-Cubed, which aims to tackle the problem of waste reduction, both at the University campus and outside it. Above all, in the next term I shall strive to be there for all science students within the University, the way the organisation, and the people in it, were there for me throughout these years.

ANDREA BALUCI
bsc. PHYSICS AND BANKING AND FINANCE
1st year

I am currently in my first year of studies as a B.Sc Banking and Finance and Physics student. It was always a belief of mine that university isn’t just about studying but it is essential to be an active student within the university community, therefore when I was asked to be a part of this team I knew that the experience could be nothing but beneficial. Working as part of this team will allow me to make use of my time at university to be a productive pro-active student.

S-Cubed is a representative organisation which brings together all students within the Faculty of Science and which ultimately makes a better university experience for the student as it guides them into making the right decision as well as help with broadening their understanding of what truly happens within the Scientific Community. With these ideologies in mind I will do my utmost to give back to the community by working hard and striving to improve upon the brilliant work that has been done by previous Executive Board Members. I will strive to work hard and diligently to bring as many opportunities to B.Sc students as possible, as experience is just as important as what’s written in the textbooks.

FRANCESCA CAMILLERI
bsc. MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS AND O.R.
2nd year

I am a second-year student reading for a degree in Maths and Statistics and Operations Research. Over the past two years attending the University of Malta, it is safe to say that S-Cubed is the student’s body back-bone. As a student representative association, I believe that S-Cubed should serve as the bridge between science students and the University’s administration. I feel that by being an active student, not only with the respective organization but even for fellow students, is beneficial and an honour in itself; if it were not for the former, none of this would be possible. If entrusted with this role, I promise to do my utmost to help all Science students in any way that I can and work tirelessly for the improvement of this organization. To sum up, I would like to congratulate the past executive on their hard work and thank the organization for this great opportunity.

JAMES CARUANA
bsc. CHEMISTRY WITH MATERIALS
1ST year

S-Cubed has proven to be an essential asset to the scientific student body which has not only openly acted as a link between the students and administration but also successfully raised the level of awareness scientific awareness amongst the local community. My aim is to help increase this organisation’s exposure and build upon the foundation that the previous executive board had constructed. Ultimately leading to more opportunities and a greater level of participation by our student body. Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the present executive board for the level of determination they have shown throughout the past year.

martina ciantar
bsc. biology
1st year

Dear colleagues,

I am Martina Ciantar and currently a first year student, reading for a degree in biology. As an organisation S-cubed was there even before enrolling into university, with informative talks about the courses within the faculty during the summer.

I believe that S-Cubed plays a very important role, this is not only the case for university students, but also the general public and students at secondary and post secondary level. As a science student, I believe that there should be more promotion and information about the courses and science itself and also the career opportunities after graduating. Furthermore, I am willing to share my ideas and contributing to the strengthening of the organisation.

I think that I can be of asset for the organisation, since I consider myself as an enthusiastic and hard working person. I am willing to further learn and work to continue building on the work done by the previous executive team. I would be honoured to be part of this organisation, should I have the opportunity to be part of the executive board. Finally, I would like to thank the previous team for their excellent work.

Thank you,
Martina Ciantar (B.Sc Biology)

KURT DARMANIN
bsc. statistics and finance
1st year

Ever since I started university, I always wanted to take part in an association. I decided to choose S-cubed, as working in the executive will give me the opportunity to further help in bringing fellow science students from different departments together. Ultimately, I believe that one of our goals is to make students feel welcome and give them the best experience possible.
I am honoured to be given a chance to serve in the executive of this organisation, and although it will be my first time doing something of the sort, I promise that I will do my utmost best to deliver what is needed from me. I believe that with new candidates, fresh ideas can be thought of and therefore we could continue building on the solid grounds that the previous executive boards have left us with.

MAY HEFNY
bsc. PHYSICS AND BANKING AND FINANCE
1st year

‘Science influences society through its knowledge and world view’. Being part of a science society means being active in the community. That is why I chose to be in science, and a part of S-Cubed. Being involved in a student organisation makes the university experience more fulfilling. Knowing the organisation's work helps in improving the university experience for other students is motivation enough to do my utmost to contribute my best to the organisation. For scientists, making a difference in the world is one of the greatest achievements, and being able to make a difference, on a smaller scale, in my own University is meaningful and enriching.
Seeing how much past S-Cubed’s events made an impact in my life, such as the latest trip to CERN, I strive to work hard to continue making students experience in the university better. If I am elected I promise to help connect and expose the students to opportunities and events that would benefit the student’s life now and in their future prospects, by working with the members of S-Cubed towards a common goal and building on what previous members of S-Cubed worked so hard to achieve. And to quote Harvey Spector, “It’s going to happen, because I am going to make it happen.”

STEVE GALEA
BSC. BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY
1ST year

I am proud to say that I had the privelige to serve as Social Policy Officer for the term of 2017/2018. Moreover I wish to add that it has been fruitful experience in which i have met and even exchanged ideas through several initiatives organised by S-Cubed and even KSU throughout this term. Moreover I believe that the work I have inputted as Social Policy Officer during the KPS meetings has been recieved very well and even reflected upon very well, in which together with other KPS representatives from the respective organisations have together suggested and implemented several ideas regarding diffirent criteria in such meeetings.
I wish to add, that I wish to serve once again in S-Cubed for the term 2018/2019 for the reason that I believe that as a science student and an ex-KPS representative within the organisation, I believe I have the know-how to handle such positions within a students’ organisation and to fuel it with the work desired for the student’s particular needs on a personal and faculty basis.

IAN SALIBA
bsc. CHEMISTRY WITH MATERIALS
1ST year

Having gone through most of my first year enjoying the fruits of S-Cubed's work I could not think twice when the opportunity arose for me to join its executive team.
I feel that Science Students Society has been guiding me and many other students towards the right direction from day one, answering to our concerns and pointing the scientific community it represents towards excellence in its field; a community that promotes novelty and inclusion across all its frontiers.
Additionally, S-Cubed thrives to bring its individuals closer to one another whilst rendering the University administration and the industry which we so strongly aspire to be a part of more accessible.
Needless to say, the Society has been adamant at pushing its students forward. As part of the executive team, my goal would be to uphold the principles which fellow members have already shaped so strongly whilst finding new ways to strengthen and develop them even further - all whilst maintaining and reciprocating the ever so positive attitude that is signature to S-Cubed.

LARA ANN XIBERRAS
bsc. maths and statistics
1st year

My name is Lara Ann Xiberras and I am currently a first-year student reading for a degree in Mathematics and Statistics and Operations Research. First time I heard about S-Cubed was during the freshers’ week where I was warmly welcomed by some of the members in the past executive at the stand. Not only was I impressed by how united, ambitious and welcoming they seemed to be, but also, I was encouraged to become part of the sub-committee and to join in their activities throughout the year.
Faced by the opportunity of becoming a member of the executive of this organisation for the upcoming year, I was delighted and willing to join the team as I truly believe that activism is a major stepping stone in enhancing the life of students and in bringing about worthwhile opportunities and changes.
As a member of the Science Student Society, I intend to work hard and do my utmost to help all science students in any way I can as well as continue building on the stellar work done and guidance given by past executive members. I am more than positive that this opportunity will be of great personal satisfaction in the sense that I will be able to increase my communication skills, get to know more people and boost my teamwork skills. Finally, I hope that my work within this organization will be beneficial to all.

BSC. MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS AND O.R.
2nd year

S-Cubed is the organisation which represents me and other science students. It can be considered as the bridge between science students and the University’s administration. However, I believe that it is not only important to be represented – one should also play a role in representing others. As a member of S-Cubed’s Executive Board, I will have the opportunity to contribute to both science students and the Faculty of Science as a whole, and also to work within one of the most well-known student organisations in the University.
As part of last year’s Executive Board, I learned values such as teamwork, responsibility and working within deadlines, amongst others. It also gave me the opportunity to involve myself in science-related issues. As the Internal Secretary, I was mainly tasked with student relations and sub-committees and the point system, as well as working with the Secretary General.
