Francesca Camilleri
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Statistics and Operations Research
2nd Year 

Ever since joining the students' council in my primary school, I realised how important student activism is. I am proud to say that I had the privilege to serve as the Science Communication Officer for the past term. I feel that by being an active student, not only with the respective organization but even for fellow students, is beneficial and an honour in itself; if it were not for the former, none of this would be possible. It has been an exciting and enriching experience. Through all the events organised by my office I understood the importance of the work we do; being CineXjenza, an event which targets adults mainly, or Science in the City and Science in the Citadel, events which attract hundreds of kids. I would be honoured to serve once again in S-Cubed for the term 2019/2020. If given this opportunity, I will strive to improve the experience of being a science student at UoM by hopefully understanding and solving any problems we, as a team, may be presented with. I would also work tirelessly for our events to be reached by more audience, as I strongly believe that our events encourage kids to pursue a career in science. To sum up, I would like to congratulate all my colleagues for their hard work and thank the organization for another great opportunity.

Gianni Ciappara 
B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry with Materials 
1st Year

My time with S-Cubed this year not only gave me the opportunity to involve myself in science-related issues but also showed me the importance of student activism and representing others. Moreover, I also learned the importance of values such as responsibility, teamwork, good communication and accountability, amongst others. For these reasons, I wish to dedicate another year within the organisation to continue building on the solid foundation laid upon by previous executive teams. My aim is to use the knowledge gained from this year’s achievements and shortcomings to strengthen our organisation serve our students better. 
 
The role of science communication officer is to share knowledge and communicate science to the general public. Exposure to science as a kid had a great impact on my life. My fascination with science at a young age was what led me to pursue a career in chemistry. My aim with this role is show people in our community the beauty of science-the same way it was shown to me as a kid.  Moreover, I wish to continue improving events such as Science in the City, Science in the Citadel, Cinexjenza and the Annual science conference as well as form new events with the new executive to better communicate science

James Wilford Caruana

2nd Year 

S-Cubed has proven to be an essential asset to the scientific student body which has not only openly acted as a link between the students and administration but also successfully raised the level of awareness scientific awareness amongst the local community. My aim is to help increase this organisation’s exposure and build upon the foundation that the previous executive board had constructed, ultimately leading to more opportunities and a greater level of participation by our student body. 

I feel that Science Students Society has been guiding me and many other students towards the right direction from day one, answering to our concerns and pointing the scientific community it represents towards excellence in its field; a community that promotes novelty and inclusion across all its frontiers.

Additionally, S-Cubed thrives to bring its individuals closer to one another whilst rendering the University administration and the industry which we so strongly aspire to be a part of more accessible.

Needless to say, the Society has been adamant at pushing its students forward. As part of the executive team, my goal would be to uphold the principles which fellow members have already shaped so strongly whilst finding new ways to strengthen and develop them even further - all whilst maintaining and reciprocating the ever so positive attitude that is signature to S-Cubed.  
Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the present executive board for the level of determination they have shown throughout the past year.

Justin Cauchi 
​B.Sc. (Hons) Biology & Chemistry 
​2nd Year

Ever since I enrolled in my course within the faculty of science, S-Cubed has played a constant and crucial role in enhancing the quality of my experience as a university student within the Faculty of Science. Firstly, S-Cubed guided me through my first months of my fresher’s year by giving talks, tours and other information which was essential for any new student in order to become more familiar with the Faculty and its operational routines. Moreover, throughout my two years at university S-Cubed has also organized many leisure and educational activities which I attended, and from which I have definitely benefited. Whilst the educational trips broadened my knowledge as well as provided me with opportunities to visit sites of possible future employment, the leisure trips provided a much needed break as well as what were, personally, important opportunities to socialize with other science students and lecturers alike, thus allowing me to meet many new people and feel more at home within the Faculty of Science. 

Perhaps S-Cubed’s biggest influence on my experience at university would have to be exposing me to student activism. Quite frankly, becoming an active student was the last thing on my mind when I enrolled for my degree. However, over the past two years I have formed part of the S-Cubed subcommittee which, acquainting me with the executives of both years, allowed me to realize how fulfilling and rewarding student activism is and how much the quality of my experience at university improved by being active. So much so that the last year I joined another student organization, IAESTE, as their public relations officer, an experience which so far has cemented my wish to continue being an active student. It is the reason why I am submitting my nomination for the role of social policy officer for the term 2019/20. Since the public relations and social policy offices of IAESTE are merged, I am already quite familiar and experienced with the role and responsibilities of being a social policy officer. Moreover, I believe through S-cubed, I can have the support and mandate needed to represent and fight for the interest of students within the Faculty of Science, thereby improving the quality of the latter’s experience at university. 
​
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the outgoing executive on their work this past term and look forward to meeting and working with the new executive, should I be accepted.

Mariah Zammit 
B.Sc. (Hons) Computer Science & Mathematics
1st Year

Being part of S-Cubed’s Executive Board for this past term has continued to stress how important and valuable being active and involved as a student is. Being an Exec Member allowed me to use my skills, while still improving them, to fulfil the aims of the organisation. I look forward to contributing to the science community within the University of Malta for another year by carrying on working to provide more opportunities for science students.

Whilst serving as Media Officer, I have learnt how vital the image of an organisation is. I have given a lot of importance to creating appealing and engaging posters which give S-Cubed a better social media presence. Following through, during the coming year I will still carry on working on improving S-Cubed’s branding in order to give a better reputation on campus.
​
Lastly, my aim for the year to come is to work towards having a unified team which works tirelessly to accomplish all objectives and aims of the organisation, mainly that of promoting unity among all students within the Faculty.

Martina Busuttil 
B.Sc. (Hons) Biology & Chemistry 
2nd Year 

I am currently a second year student reading for a B.Sc. in Biology and Chemistry. As a student of science, I understand better than most the ever-present nature of science in our day-to-day lives. We don’t study science; we understand it, see it, and experience it constantly. And it is only thanks to the role of committed student groups like S-Cubed, that we can truly experience science the way it was meant to be experienced. 

My two years at University have shown me how incessantly active S-cubed is drawing out the importance of science within the local community, uniting science students together, and bridging the gap between students and administration in order to make all of this possible.  Seeing their constant effort has made me tired of admiring from afar. I would like to join this dynamic team as International Officer, so that I can push this team forward in the best way I know how: by using my enthusiasm, willingness to work with my fellow students, and borderline hyperactivity to help us bring students of science together from across the globe.
​
The work done by previous executive boards of S-Cubed is excellent – no two ways about that. But as a new member of the executive, I plan to bring forward new ideas and help to push forward the solid foundation already set by previous boards. There will be a learning curve for me, I’m sure.But there will be no debate over my determination to do my best to ensure that, together with my team, I will help S cubed extend into new territories,  while staying ever faithful to the fundamental principles on which it is built.

Matteo Giorgino 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Banking and Finance
​1st Year

I am currently in my first year of studies as a B.Sc Maths, Banking & Finance student. I always believed that there was more to university than lectures and studying, I find it essential to also be a proactive student within the university community. 

As a fresher I have been introduced to S-cubed from the freshers’ stand, it felt very welcoming especially since I was new to everything at university, and felt lost with all the differences in schedules, structure and organisations. S-Cubed was a huge helping hand to me and other students, both academically, with help in timetable, course notes and guidelines, and also in helping me feel more at home in the faulty with a variety of leisure events.
​
If entrusted with this role, I’ll promise to do my utmost in improving the university experience to all science students, work tirelessly, and keep on building on the astounding work done by the previous executives, in order to help all students around the faculty and also freshers in the following academic year to feel welcomed and at home with the faculty of science, since I believe social inclusion is one of the main building blocks of a healthy academic experience in the university.

​1st Year

I am currently in my first year as a B.Sc Mathematics and Statistics and Operations Research. From this year as a Faculty of Science student I have noticed that S-cubed is an amazing organisation that bridges the gap between the students and the faculty itself, this makes the students realised that they do have a say in what happens in their life at University.
​
This is why I have applied for the role of Environmental Officer, as apart from the fact that I am very passionate about the environment and how to conserve it, I believe that keeping our environment clean and sustainable can make all University students feel more at home and comfortable. I would be honoured to be a part of this great team and create an environmentally friendly University for the benefit of all students.

Owen Cuschieri 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Physics
1st Year

My love for Science roots from ever since I was a young boy learning for the first time about Newton’s Laws. The excitement that comes with every equation together with the mystery of all the unsolved questions of the universe makes this field so magnificently unique that it’s beautiful.

Bringing every department within the Faculty together, be it for work or a pleasant conversation about the beginning of the universe has been one of the many goals that S-Cubed has succeeded in throughout the years and that is why I am so happy and so honoured to be a part of it. 

​Although it will be my first time doing something of the sort, I promise that I will do my utmost best to deliver what is needed from me.

Rachel Attard Chase 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Philosophy 
1st Year

I am a first-year student, reading for a B.Sc. degree in Maths and Philosophy. So far, my time at university has been a positive one, and it is partly thanks to S-Cubed, who were so welcoming right from the beginning. Having been part of the Social Policy sub-committee, I was able to witness just a fraction of all the hard work that goes on. Furthermore, as part of the sub-committee, I helped in the research of a number of Social Policy Papers.
​
However, having now been on the receiving end of the fruits of their labour I hope to not only give my own contribution to S-Cubed, but additionally to help to create a better university experience for all science students, by improving upon the excellent work done by the previous executive board.

Rebekah Caruana 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Statistics and Operations Research
​1st Year

I am Rebekah Caruana, a first-year student reading for a bachelor’s degree and Mathematics and Statistics and Operations Research. 

Starting my first year at university was exciting but at times daunting especially until I got the hang of things, however, S-cubed were there to help. This made me realise the importance of having a student organisation to represent the faculty of science students. In order to give back to the society, I decided to join the Science Communications sub-committee which gave me a better insight on the work that was being carried out by the current executive in order to organise events for students of the faculty as well as for the general public. 

From the experience I’ve had as part of the sub-committee, given the opportunity, I look forward to contributing my skills further by being part of the executive board. I will strive to continue building on the work of the previous executive in order to strengthen the science society that we are proud to be part of.

​I would like to take this opportunity to thank this year’s executive board for all the work they carry out for the students and for the faculty.

Stephanie Buttigieg 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Physics
1st Year 

I am a first year student reading for a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics and Physics. Throughout the past year I have participated in multiple events organised by S-Cubed be it leisure events which provided the perfect opportunity for me to meet other students from the Faculty of Science, or educational events, such as the Annual Science Conference and Ċinexjenza, which gave me the opportunity to look beyond my course and delve into other areas of science. For this I would like to thank the past executive for all their hard work.
​
I believe that student societies can not only make life at university more enjoyable for us students but that they are of utmost importance for the rest of society. This is why I was an active member of the Science Communication Sub-Committee throughout the past term and am very enthusiastic about being given a chance to form part of the new executive for the upcoming one.

Matthew Camilleri 
B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics & Statistics and Operations Research 
1st Year 

The 35th President of USA John F. Kennedy made a speech in support for NASA's fledgling Apollo program in September 12th 1962; during his deliverance, persistence and inquisition rose to the surface and personally even after 57 years is admirable: “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard,”. 

​As I grow older, my interest in current affairs evolved and grew larger ever since a realisation - what matters the most is activism and education in our society.  We are people who dedicate their energy, their time and some even their whole lives to science, but what is our dedication’s worth if it is not living in our society?

Hence, I am thrilled to be a part of S-Cubed and together give a youthful, energetic (and even geeky) breath of fresh air to the science community at the University of Malta. 

There’s no better discipline than the Scientific discipline which always verges for the truth and efforts to make our lives better for tomorrow. “It is remarkable that a science which began with the consideration of games of chance should have become the most important object of human knowledge.” - Pierre-Simon Laplace has said in Théorie Analytique des Probabilitiés (1812).
